What a Xero to NetSuite migration actually turns on
The biggest decision in a Xero migration is how much history to bring: opening balances only, a few years, or the full history as native NetSuite transactions. It drives the cost, the method and how much of Xero you can switch off, so settle it before anything else. Our Xero to NetSuite migration guide compares the seven ways to do it.
Tracking categories are the other question that comes up every time. Xero gives you two. NetSuite gives you department, location, class, and configured custom segments, so there is no default destination: it depends on what each category means in your reporting, and the answer can differ per category. Archived tracking options are the easy thing to miss, because historical transactions still reference them long after nobody selects them.
Worth saying plainly, because it is the part that gets skipped: this is a move from accounting software to an ERP, so the migration is also when you decide what reporting looks like afterwards. Copying Xero's structure straight across is the most common way to spend the whole budget and end up with the same reporting you had before.
Where Xero migrations get stuck
- Tracking categories. Two source dimensions, four possible destinations, and no mapping that is right for every business.
- Archived options. Tracking values nobody uses today but historical transactions still point at.
- Allocations, not just balances. Payment and credit allocations have to survive the move. Balances agreeing is not evidence that they did.
- Attachments and changed forms. Records that will not exist in the same shape in NetSuite need to be agreed as in or out of scope before the work starts.
- Currency and period settings. A comparison run on mismatched settings looks like a broken migration when the mapping was fine.
